August 1983 - Mike Bruns
and early employees
Comtrak started in July of 1983 primarily as an intermodal drayage company servicing the rail and steamship industry from Memphis, Tennessee. By March of 1984, Mike Bruns became the sole stockholder and president of a company that boasted 16 owner operators. The beginnings were humble and that became the most important ingredient of the unique company culture, in spite of the achievements, awards and recognitions that were continually bestowed upon the young company. That culture hasn’t changed and the recognitions haven’t stopped.

As the company grew and expanded, the opportunities to serve the customers grew even more. In 1995, Comtrak added “Logistics” to the name to better reflect this continued expansion of the transportation services and solutions offered to customers. The menu of services includes full truckload transportation, container storage depots, logistic services including brokerage and rail, as well as electronic support systems. That small intermodal drayage operation that began in 1983 is now recognized as the leader in the industry throughout the entire United States.

In 2006, Comtrak Logistics, Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hub Group and has grown rapidly as Hub rolled its QS fleet under the Comtrak brand and systems. Comtrak Logistics now has over 1300 drivers in 23 different facilities across the United States.

One thing that hasn’t changed since Comtrak started is the people. Sure, there are hundreds of folks that are now in the Comtrak family compared to only a handful a few years ago. That family culture, however, is what sets Comtrak apart from the others. It’s the people who have given the growth, multiplied the fleet, expanded the menu, and given Comtrak its success. It’s those same people who will give Comtrak an even brighter future as it moves through the next decade.
